The exhibition “Le Corbusier: Synthesis of the Arts 1930-1965” will be held from January 11 (Saturday) to March 23 (Sunday), 2025, at the Panasonic Shiodome Museum in Tokyo.
Le Corbusier, a globally renowned modernist architect and the designer of Tokyo’s National Museum of Western Art, was also known for his prowess in visual arts. The exhibition focuses on his artistic maturity, highlighting paintings, sculptures, sketches, tapestries, and architectural works created from the 1930s onward. This is the first exhibition in Japan to examine his work from his forties and beyond, showcasing the evolution of his artistic vision. The concept of “synthesis of the arts” refers to Le Corbusier’s attempt to connect painting and sculpture under the direction of architecture in his later years, representing his broader artistic philosophy.
The exhibition design will be curated by the architecture collective UltraStudio. The exhibit will highlight Le Corbusier’s interiors, using “interior,” “coordination,” and “transition” as keywords, with the exhibition space arranged to evoke his concept of “synthesis of the arts” within residential settings.
The guest curator for this exhibition is Robert Woitschützke, a German art historian. Woitschützke, who was a guest researcher at the National Museum of Western Art from 2020 to 2022, published “The Unfinished Museum,” offering a new interpretation of Le Corbusier’s design for the museum. His curatorial approach has garnered attention, and there will be a lecture and symposium featuring him as part of related events.
The exhibition will be open on weekdays without the need for reservations. However, reservations are required for Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, and entry without a reservation will only be allowed if space is available on the day.
