In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki’s birth, “Shigeru Mizuki’s Specters: One Hundred Ghosts and Nightly Ghosts” will be held at the Sogo Museum of Art in Yokohama from January 20 (Sat) to March 10 (Sun), 2024.
The exhibition will be the first Shigeru Mizuki exhibition to focus on the specific methods used in the creation of yokai paintings. More than 100 of Mizuki’s yokai paintings will be exhibited, and his creative methods will be discussed in three categories: “Inheritance from the painters,” “Creation from various materials,” and “Creation from textual information. The exhibition also traces the genealogy of yokai-related materials collected by Mizuki, such as Toriyama Sekien’s “Gazu Hyakki Yagyo” and Yanagida Kunio’s “Yokai Dangi” (A Discussion of Specters), as well as the painters, researchers and other cultural figures who worked on these works.

Related events include an advance special viewing with a gallery talk by Mizuki’s eldest daughter, Naoko Haraguchi, and a lecture by Kyogoku Natsuhiko, allowing visitors to appreciate Mizuki’s worldview from a variety of perspectives as he rooted the culture of yokai.
