“Van Gogh and Still Life: From Tradition to Innovation” will be held at the SOMPO Museum of Art in Shinjuku, Tokyo, from October 17 (Tuesday) to January 21 (Sunday), 2024.
The exhibition is organized around Van Gogh and still life painting, with three chapters: “Tradition: 17th Century Holland to 19th Century,” “Flower Still Life Painting: Sunflowers,” and “Innovation: 19th to 20th Centuries. What did Van Gogh learn from his predecessors and reflect in his own work, and what influence did he have on the next generation of painters? The exhibition also focuses on “Sunflowers” and includes paintings of sunflowers by Van Gogh and other artists.
Of the 69 works exhibited from 25 locations in Japan and abroad, 25 are oil paintings by Van Gogh, including “Sunflowers” and “Iris”. Still life paintings by Pieter Claesz,Eugène Delacroix,Édouard Manet,Claude Monet,Camille Pissarro,Pierre-Auguste Renoir,Paul Gauguin,Paul Cézanne,Maurice de Vlaminck,Marc Chagalland others will also be on display.
