Shunji Iwai, acclaimed director of films such as ‘Swallowtail,’ ‘All About Lily Chou-Chou,’ and ‘Kyrie,’ has been announced as the visual director for ROTH BART BARON’s upcoming live show at Spotify O-EAST in Shibuya, Tokyo, on March 22, 2025. This event will serve as the grand finale for the band’s ongoing tour, The Ice Age: Melt and Blooms, which began in November 2024.
The tour’s final performance will take place with the band’s full ensemble, and Iwai’s visual direction comes in response to a special request from Masaya Mifune, the band’s leader. Known for his distinctive and evocative visual style, Iwai’s involvement is highly anticipated, and his collaboration promises to elevate the live experience for attendees.
The announcement also includes a comment from Masaya Mifune, sharing his excitement about Iwai’s creative direction for the event. Fans can expect a truly immersive and cinematic performance as ROTH BART BARON wraps up their tour in style.
When Shunji Iwai was conceptualizing Kirie no Uta, he had a moment of clarity during a ROTH BART BARON live show, where he saw Aina the End singing with us and thought, “She’s the one.”
I’ve been captivated by Iwai’s unique vision ever since I was a child, and watching his work shaped my growth. Not being part of his projects was something I deeply regretted, always holding onto the desire, “One day, I want to create something with Iwai.” And now, that dream is finally becoming a reality.
As a celebration of our 10-year journey as a band, we’ll bring our music to life, while Iwai will contribute his distinctive visuals, essentially becoming a member of ROTH in this collaborative effort (I hope he’s okay with me saying this!).
Music is cinema, live shows are cinema, and cinema is music. On that one magical night, we will create a living, breathing fusion of both art forms.
This will be a truly special evening, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you. Let’s make unforgettable memories together.
Masaya Mifune
