The film ‘Music’ will be screening at Bunkamura Le Cinema in Shibuya, Tokyo, starting December 13 (Friday). The Japanese poster visual and trailer have also been unveiled.
The film is a drama about a man named Yong, who, after experiencing a tragic event, finds healing through music and tries to overcome his sorrow by singing. The story, which takes inspiration from the famous tragedy ‘Oedipus Rex,’ has been boldly adapted with a European setting and creative liberties. The film was selected for the competition at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay. It has also been chosen for major international film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, London Film Festival, and Tokyo International Film Festival, receiving widespread praise.
Directed, written, and edited by Angela Schanelec, who won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival for her film ‘I Was at Home, But’ and is renowned for her beautifully austere style, often compared to Robert Bresson and Chantal Akerman. The lead roles are played by Alyosha Schneider, known for ‘Julia(s)’ and also a singer, and Agathe Bonitzer, known for her remarkable performance in ‘Isadora’s Children.’ The film’s music, an essential part of the narrative, was composed by Doug Tielli, a Toronto-based artist with many fans in Japan and a collaborator with Sandro Perri. Schanelec spent over a year researching before discovering Tielli’s music, which ultimately guided the completion of the film.
The newly released trailer highlights the strength and beauty of Schanelec’s imagery, featuring a gentle, serene performance scene that connects to the film’s title, ‘Music.’
