YouTube announced the launch of the “YouTube Music AI Incubator” in Japan on Thursday, March 21, 2023, which was launched in the summer of 2023.
The “YouTube Music AI Incubator” is a program for people involved in music production to provide information on YouTube’s approach to generative AI in music. 2023 will see the establishment of the “Music AI Fundamentals,” which outlines the idea of protecting artistic integrity on YouTube, Anitta, Björn Ulvaeus, David (d4vd), Don Was, Juanes, Louis Bell, Max Richter, Rodney Jerkins (Universal Music Group (UMG), including Rodney Jerkins, Rosanne Cash, Ryan Tedder, Yo Gotti, Estate of Frank Sinatra, and many more. The first release in Japan will be the “First Release”, a new album of “The First Release”, which will be released in the U.S. and Europe in the U.S.
In Japan, Crypton Future Media Inc., known for the development of “Hatsune Miku,” has been announced as the first Japanese company to participate in the project. The company has also announced a collaboration with UMG’s Japanese subsidiary.
Participants in the program will receive early access to Lyria, a music generation model developed by Google DeepMind, Google’s AI research division. Lyria is capable of generating high-quality, harmonious music with instruments and vocals, working on arrangements, and making detailed settings for the style and technique of the output music. For example, by simply entering an idea into a prompt, one can blend genres, turn a beat into a melody, or add a soundtrack to vocals.
In addition, UMG announced on Wednesday, March 20, a strategic partnership with Roland Corporation to support music artists and creators worldwide. The partnership is driven by the desire of both companies to clarify their direction and intent regarding the application of AI in music production, and to explore innovations at the intersection of music and technology.
Music generation AI is expected to help artists produce music and create a future where even people without knowledge can create music. On the other hand, copyright issues are controversial.
One example of a real-life case is “heart on my sleeve,” a collaboration between Canadian rapper Drake and singer/songwriter The Weeknd, which was created using AI. It was released in April 2023 and received over 15 million views on TikTok. However, the two artists were not involved in the production of the song, which was created without their permission by someone calling himself “ghostwriter977. UMG, to which both Drake and The Weeknd belong, issued a warning to the affiliated streaming company, claiming that it constituted an infringement of intellectual property rights, which has now been removed.
Music-generating AI can be both friend and foe of artists, and it is hoped that the agreements and initiatives of these companies will help create a future in which music and AI coexist. Finally, we cite the “Principles for Music Creation by AI” announced by UMG and Roland Corporation.
