The 8th Yokohama Triennale “Wildflowers: Living Here, Now” opened on Friday, March 15.
“Yokohama Triennale” is a contemporary art festival held once every three years and boasts a long history among the more than 200 art festivals held in Japan since its start in 2001. The Triennale is characterized by inviting internationally active artistic directors each year to introduce what artists from around the world are thinking and creating today.
For the 8th edition of this event, 93 artists from 31 countries and regions will participate in five venues, including the Yokohama Museum of Art, which reopened after a major renovation for the first time in three years. The artistic directors were Beijing-based Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu.
The word “wildflowers” in the theme is taken from “Wildflowers,” a collection of poems by Lu Xun, a Chinese novelist with close ties to Japan. At a time when climate change, war, intolerance, economic disparity, and other factors are shaking the values that underpin our daily lives, the exhibition attempts to reflect on the way of life of people living today and to find hope beyond that through the works of contemporary artists.
In addition, the event will be called “Art Morimori! and art programs, including exhibitions, will be held at art activity centers throughout the city. Visitors can enjoy art while walking around Yokohama in spring.
