Hakushi Hasegawa signed with Brainfeeder and released its first single, “Mouth Flash,” on July 25 (Tuesday).
Brainfeeder is an LA-based label with artists such as Thundercat, Louis Cole, and Hiatus Cayote. Hasegawa is the first Japanese artist to join the label.
“Mouth Flash” features Los Angeles native Sam Wilkes as bassist. The cover was designed by Shanliang, a visual artist from China. The music video, which was released on the same day, was directed by Tsuribe Tokyo and was created under the theme of “New Festival. It is a fusion of dance by Korea-based Yoon Ji, animation by Sawako Kageyama, and footage by contemporary artist Rintaro Unno.
Hakushi Hasegawa’s comment
I’m pleased to announce that I signed a contract with Brainfeeder. And I will start distributing a new song called “Mouth Flash”! A very nice music video will be released at the same time.
What I feel I should do from now on is to disturb the music with my own body, and to expose the chaos, although it is not coherent. I believe that this piece is the very beginning of that process. (The body is always subject to the forces of history and categorization, but always seems to be situated between individual narratives, songs, and dances at the same time.)
It is a real honor to be able to release it on such an important label as Brainfeeder, which has been presenting the chaos of music throughout its activities.
Please give it a listen! I did my best! Best regards, and thank you very much for your time! Pascher
Tsuribe Tokyo comment
Based on the energy of the music and the unique rhythm that sounds like festival music, the production was staged and created under the theme of “New Festival” that combines all kinds of cultures and elements.
Fragmentary situations and scenes picked up by Hasegawa Hakushi himself from the song, powerful dance performance by Yoon Ji, a dancer active in Korea, adorable and quirky characters and animation by Sawako Kageyama, and live-action video by Rintaro Unno that sharply captures the reality, The film combines a variety of images, including graphic design using fireworks as a motif, and depicts an unknown festival and excitement as seemingly divergent elements of reality and unreality are blended together.
