MUTEK.JP 2025 Edition 10 will return to Shibuya this fall, running from November 20 to 23 across Spotify O-EAST and WWW. The festival, now celebrating its 10th anniversary, continues its mission of exploring the intersection of electronic music, digital art, and technology through a forward-thinking lineup of audiovisual performances and talks.
This year’s theme focuses on the resonance between technological innovation and creativity, inviting over 20 artists from Japan and abroad to showcase experimental live sets that blur the boundaries between sound and visuals.
The festival opens on November 20 at WWW with the A/Visions program, headlined by Montreal-based media artist Martin Messier’s immersive new work 1 drop 1000 years, which reflects on ocean currents and climate change through sound, light, and movement. Also featured is the trio of Jim O’Rourke, Eiko Ishibashi, and Joe Talia, performing improvised electroacoustic soundscapes.
On November 21, Spotify O-EAST hosts Nocturne 1, spotlighting cutting-edge and unconventional sounds. The program brings together Alva Noto from Berlin, experimental rhythm collective goat, alternative rock outfit GEZAN, Korean artist machìna, and Ecuadorian producer Nicola Cruz.
Nocturne 2 follows on November 22, featuring NONOTAK from Paris, London’s Halina Rice, Vienna-based MONOCOLOR, the collaborative project Verses GT (Jacques Greene and Nosaj Thing), and Montreal’s Martyn Bootyspoon. Japan’s Daito Manabe will also perform, revisiting the audiovisual work he debuted at Barcelona’s Sónar Festival.
The closing program, Nocturne 3, takes place November 23 with a special ambient live set by Sakanaction bassist Manami Kusakari and kyoka. Grammy-nominated artist Marie Davidson makes her Japan debut, joined by Guillaume Coutu-Dumont and Line Katcho from Montreal. Japan-based acts include Open Reel Ensemble, who perform using reel-to-reel tape machines as instruments, and WaqWaq Kingdom, the duo of Scotch Rolex and Kiki Hitomi. The festival finale will feature an improvised session combining the talents of Satoshi Tomiie, Kuniyuki Takahashi, and Manami Sakamoto.
In addition to live performances, the festival will host the MUTEK.JP Pro Conference at Shibuya Hikarie Hall B, offering daytime panels and talks centered on digital creativity and emerging technology. Further details will be announced in late October.
Tickets are on sale now via Zaiko, with various pricing tiers and full festival passes available.
