Johnnivan’s third album, Swimmer, is set to be released on Wednesday, November 27.
Formed in Tokyo in 2018, Johnnivan is a multinational rock band consisting of members from Japan, the U.S., and South Korea: Johnathan Calrissian (Vocals), Shogo Takatsu (Keyboards), Junsoo Lee (Guitar), Kento Yoshida (Bass), and Yusaku Nakano (Drums). Their music, themed around “Classic x Dance x Electro,” incorporates a variety of genres and has received high praise. They have performed at numerous domestic festivals, including SUMMER SONIC. In 2024, they gained significant recognition in South Korea with performances at the DMZ Peace Train Music Festival in June, a Seoul tour in September, and participation in the circuit festival ZANDARI FESTA in October.
Swimmer, the follow-up to their 2020 album Students and 2022’s Give In!, features a total of 10 tracks, including the previously released singles “Kayoesque” and “Final Girl.” While maintaining their focus on traditional dance music, the album elevates elements from 1990s sampling to modern club music. Additionally, songwriter Johnathan Calrissian notes that many of the songs were born in environments that are “close to water,” both mentally and physically. On Wednesday, October 23, the lead single “Frohsinn ’82” was released from the upcoming album.
On Saturday, December 7, Johnnivan will hold their self-produced event WE LOVE Vol.2 at ADRIFT in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, marking their first event in about a year. The opening act will feature salmon pink, with harinezumi performing as the DJ, while Johnnivan will take the stage as the main act. They are set to perform a full set for the first time since their inaugural solo concert in April. Tickets are currently available on e-plus.
