Anselm Kiefer’s solo exhibition “Opus Magnum” is being held at Fergus McCaffrey Tokyo in Omotesando, Tokyo, from April 2 (Tuesday).
Anselm Kiefer is one of the leading contemporary artists of postwar Germany, known for his grandiose expression of themes such as the dark history of Nazi Germany, mythology, history, and philosophy in his paintings, sculptures, and architecture. In 2022, he will hold a solo exhibition at the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, a World Heritage Site, and in 2025, he will hold a solo exhibition at Nijo Castle in Kyoto, also a World Heritage Site.
Anselm Kiefer’s first solo exhibition in Japan was held in 1998 at the Hakone Open-Air Museum in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, and at the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art in Sakura, Chiba Prefecture. This solo exhibition will feature a total of 20 works in glass cases and watercolors. Admission is free and the exhibition will end on Saturday, June 29. Due to the exhibition space, there is a limit of a maximum of five visitors at one time.
A 160-page exhibition catalog containing essays contributed by the 12 artists and texts about each work is also available for purchase. The catalog is priced at 10,000 yen including tax, and is available only in cash; as of Wednesday, April 10, the catalog was sold out, and reservations for additional deliveries can only be made at the venue with advance payment.
Wim Wenders’ documentary film on the life and present of Anselm Kiefer, “Anselm, Artist of the Wounded World,” will be released in Japan on June 21 (Fri.) during the exhibition.
