The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced on January 23 (Tuesday) in Japan.
Leading the pack with the most nominations is Christopher Nolan’s film “Oppenheimer.” Depicting the life of Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist known as the “father of the atomic bomb,” the film earned nominations in a record-breaking 13 categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
In addition to “Oppenheimer,” 10 other films were nominated for Best Picture, including “
Poor Things” by Yorgos Lanthimos, “Killers of the Flower Moon” by Martin Scorsese, and “Barbie” by Greta Gerwig.
From Japan, “Perfect Days” starring Koji Yakusho and directed by Wim Wenders was nominated for Best International Feature Film, “The Boy and the Heron” directed by Hayao Miyazaki was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film, and “Godzilla Minus One” directed by Takashi Yamazaki was nominated for Best Visual Effects. If “Godzilla Minus One” wins the Best Visual Effects Award, it will be the first time for a Japanese film, let alone an Asian film, to do so.
