Sofia Coppola’s latest film “Priscilla” (original title) will be released in April 2024 at TOHO Cinemas Chante and other theaters nationwide.
Based on the memoir “My Elvis” (original title: Elvis and Me) published by Elvis Presley’s ex-wife Priscilla Presley in 1985, the film depicts the fateful encounter, marriage, birth, and parting of Elvis, who was already a superstar at the time, from Sofia Coppola’s perspective. The film depicts her fateful encounter with Elvis, who was already a superstar at the time, their marriage, birth, and parting from Sofia Coppola’s perspective.
Priscilla is played by Cary Spinney, who played the heroine in “Pacific Rim: Uprising”. Elvis is played by Jacob Elordi, known for his role as Nate in the drama “Euphoria.
The film is distributed in North America by A24. The North American teaser video shows a montage of Elvis and Priscilla’s time together while Spectrum’s “How You Satisfy Me” plays in the background.
Directed by Sofia Coppola, whose parents are Francis Ford Coppola and Eleanor Neal (The Godfather), Elvis and Priscilla made their feature film debut in 1999 with The Virgin Suicides.
The film, based on Jeffrey Eugenides’ best-selling novel “Five Sisters Who Committed Suicide in Snake Dragonfly Season,” tells the story from the perspective of a young boy about five beautiful sisters of the Lisbon family, the object of the boys’ admiration, who take their lives one after another. The pale and nostalgic worldview of the film had a great influence on girly culture. The themes of “imprisoned girls” and “loneliness” found in the film are also found in later works such as “Lost in Translation” and “Marie Antoinette”.
“Lost in Translation,” his second film as a director, was made in 2003 and is set in Tokyo. The film tells the story of Bob Harris, a Hollywood actor who is in Tokyo on business, and Charlotte, modeled after Sofia Coppola herself, who are staying at the same hotel and have a brief heart-to-heart in a foreign land where they do not speak the same language. The film won the “76th Academy Awards” for Best Screenplay, the “61st Golden Globe Awards” for Best Screenplay, and the “30th Cesar Awards” for Best Foreign Film.
“SOMEWHERE” won the Golden Lion at the “67th Venice International Film Festival. Inspired by Sofia’s own childhood, the film depicts a Hollywood star who leads a glamorous but empty life in a luxury hotel in Los Angeles, and how she rethinks her life through the time she spends with her daughter who lives with her ex-wife. Charlotte Wells, director of “Aftersun,” which won over 70 awards worldwide and was released in Japan in 2023, cites Sofia Coppola as one of her influences, and some scenes in “Aftersun” are reminiscent of her work. Sofia Coppola’s style, which depicts a world created with a high aesthetic sense and a quiet view of the “loneliness” hidden behind it, has had a great influence on the next generation and is creating followers.
Sofia Coppola’s seventh film, “The Beguiled,” won the Best Director Award at the 70th Cannes International Film Festival, making her the second female director in 56 years to receive this honor. Her previous film, “On the Rocks,” tells the story of a woman of her own generation who pursues her husband who is suspected of cheating on her. The change in her subject from “girls” to “adult women” over the past few years can be seen as Sofia Coppola’s own maturation, or her acquisition of a mature woman’s point of view.
Sofia Coppola is also known for her excellent taste in music selection for her films, and in “Virgin Suicides” she used the sad 1970s hits of Todd Rundgren and Gilbert O’Sullivan, and in “Lost in Translation” she used the songs of the same name, In “Lost in Translation,” he uses shoegaze sounds such as My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus & Mary Chain to emphasize the loneliness of Tokyo, and his commitment to a wide range of genres.
A playlist featuring Sofia Coppola’s film music is also available on NiEW. Additional music used in “Priscilla” (original title) is scheduled to be added in the future.
