Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s film “Evil Doesn’t Exist” will be released nationwide on Friday, April 26, 2024.
This will be Hamaguchi’s first feature film since “Drive My Car,” which is set in Hiroshima in 2021. Eiko Ishibashi, who was in charge of music for “Drive My Car,” asked Hamaguchi to make a video for her own live performance, and the film was born from the process of making the video. The cast includes Hitoshi Omiga, Rei Nishikawa, Ryuji Kosaka, and Sayiku Shibuya.
The Japan premiere was held at the “Hiroshima International Film Festival 2023” on November 26 (Sun.), and the first day of nationwide release was confirmed. In Tokyo, the film will be screened at Bunkamura Le Cinema Shibuya Miyashita in Shibuya and Shimokitazawa’s Shimokita Ekimae Cinema K2.
The story takes place in a town located in the nature-rich highlands of Nagano Prefecture. The town is in turmoil after it is discovered that an entertainment agency is planning to build a glamping site, and that they intend to discharge sewage into the water supply.
In addition, Eiko Ishibashi’s silent film “GIFT” for live music performance, made from the same visual materials as the film, was premiered at the “Ghent International Film Festival” in Belgium in October, along with Ishibashi’s live performance. In Japan, it was specially presented at “Tokyo FILMeX” on November 23 (Thursday, national holiday), and is scheduled to be presented in other parts of the world in the future.
