The poster visual for the film “Evil Does Not Exist,” set to be released nationwide from April 26 (Friday), has been revealed.
The film, directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, is his first feature film in three years since “Drive My Car,” which won the International Feature Film Award at the 94th Academy Awards in 2021. It also received the Silver Lion award at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. The collaboration originated when Hikaru Ishibashi, who composed the music for “Drive My Car,” offered Hamaguchi an opportunity to create visual content. The production followed a unique approach, first completing a film using traditional methods and then generating visuals for a commissioned live performance. This project emerged alongside Ishibashi’s live silent film, “GIFT.”
The story is set in a town situated on the nature-rich highlands of Nagano Prefecture. The plot revolves around the revelation of a plan by an entertainment agency to create a glamping site, which leads to the town’s disturbance upon discovering the intention to discharge wastewater into the water source. The aftermath affects the modest life of the protagonist, Takumi, and his daughter, Hana. The cast includes performers such as Hiroshi Omika, who initially joined as part of the production staff, along with Rei Nishikawa, Ryushi Kosaka, and Satsuki Shibuya.
The poster visual released depicts Takumi and Hana living modestly in the midst of nature, and follows the illustration of the Italian version of the visual from the previous film “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy.”
