Takashi Murakami’s large-scale solo exhibition “Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto” will be held at the Kyocera Museum of Art in Kyoto for seven months from February 3 (Sat) to September 1 (Sun), 2024.
Takashi Murakami has questioned the value and essential meaning of art through quotations from and collaborations with popular culture such as manga and anime. He is highly acclaimed worldwide as a representative of the contemporary art scene and has been selected as one of the “Power 100” (the 100 most influential people in the art world) by Art Review magazine for 10 consecutive years.
This will be Murakami’s first solo exhibition at a museum in Japan in about eight years, and his first large-scale exhibition outside of Tokyo, as he has been deeply interested in and inspired by Kyoto, where painters were active during the Edo period. He is currently working on special versions of works inspired by Japanese art, such as “Cute Summer Vacation (Summer Vacation in the Golden Kingdom)” (2008) and the “Korin” series (2015), as well as a number of new works referencing Kyoto and its history.
The exhibition period was announced in February this year to last until June, but it has been decided that the exhibition will be significantly extended. The date of advance ticket sales will be announced as soon as it is determined, and special tickets are also planned to be sold.
