Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film “Bugonia” is officially set to hit Japanese theaters on February 13.
Fresh off winning the Best Director award at the 96th Academy Awards for “Poor Things,” Lanthimos returns with a new, reality-bending kidnapping thriller. The film brings together a powerhouse team: Ari Aster of “Midsommar” joins as producer, alongside Miky Lee and the production team behind “Parasite.” Emma Stone leads the cast, marking her fifth collaboration with Lanthimos.
Stone stars as Michelle, a charismatic CEO of a global pharmaceutical company and one of the world’s most influential leaders. Her life takes a shocking turn when she’s abducted by Teddy (Jesse Plemons), a conspiracy theorist convinced she’s an alien invader, and his cousin Don (Aidan Delves). Locked in a basement, Michelle uses her background in psychology to negotiate her release — but her captors refuse to budge, demanding she “take them to her spaceship.” Their stalemate escalates into a twisting battle of wits, eventually unearthing Teddy’s buried past and pushing all three toward a dangerous, no-turning-back confrontation.
The newly released trailer opens with Michelle striding confidently to Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!,” before spiraling into bizarre exchanges with her kidnappers and a shocking scene of Michelle shaving her head. The footage teases a story that defies prediction at every turn.
A striking new poster was also unveiled, depicting Michelle drenched in red blood and golden honey — imagery evoking the ancient Greek belief that bees were born from the carcass of a cow, the mythological inspiration behind the film’s enigmatic title “Bugonia.”
