A major exhibition titled sakamotocommon OSAKA 1970/2025/Osaka/Ryuichi Sakamoto is set to open at the cultural venue VS. in Osaka, offering an immersive look into the early influences and enduring legacy of the renowned composer and artist Ryuichi Sakamoto.
The exhibition’s title, “sakamotocommon,” represents an initiative to share and repurpose Sakamoto’s intellectual and material heritage for the inspiration and use of future creators. Central to the exhibit is the recreation of the impact the 18-year-old Sakamoto felt at the 1970 Osaka Expo, now revisited as Osaka prepares to host the Expo again in 2025. This will be the first large-scale exhibition dedicated to Sakamoto in his hometown.
One highlight is the display of Bashē’s avant-garde sound sculpture originally created for the 1970 Expo, alongside a new sound sculpture developed by the Bashē restoration project team from Tokyo University of the Arts, crafted especially for Sakamoto.
Visitors will also experience a program that reproduces Sakamoto’s performances using the grand piano he frequently played. A re-creation of Sakamoto’s personal reading space will be on display, and the exhibition will include the “Sakamoto Library Annex,” featuring rare books from his collection as well as exclusive merchandise for sale.
The exhibition will run from August 30 through September 27, 2025. Tickets will be available by advance online reservation starting at 10:00 AM on August 1. This event offers a unique opportunity to explore the profound cultural and artistic influences that shaped one of Japan’s most influential musicians.
