The exhibition Stream of Banksy Effect – Street Art (R)Evolution – will be held at Shibuya Stream Hall in Tokyo from January 22 to March 23, 2025, exploring the history of street art.
Street art originated in the late 1960s in New York, where young people facing social unrest, including poverty and deteriorating public safety, began tagging subway cars, station walls, and building facades with their own signatures, known as “tags.” What was once viewed as illegal graffiti and an act of vandalism has now evolved, with more works being produced with permission, contributing to the creation of urban landscapes. Due to its use of public spaces, street art has become a powerful means of spreading messages related to individual artists, local communities, and social issues, leaving a significant impact on culture.
The Street Art Evolution and Revolution exhibition will feature around 100 works by 49 artists, including Banksy, who revolutionized the street art scene, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and emerging Japanese artists who are gaining international attention. The exhibition will showcase the evolution of artistic techniques and the global spread of street art, with a particular focus on the influence of Banksy on contemporary artists. This will provide a new perspective on the potential and significance of street art.

During the exhibition, an outdoor installation by Italian artist RAUL is also planned to take place at the venue. Ahead of the opening, a comment from the chief curator, Patrizia Cattaneo Moresi, has been released.
How did street art, once associated with illegal graffiti on subway cars, evolve into a global phenomenon that captivates the world? And where is this movement heading? The answer to these questions lies in the exhibition “Street Art: Evolution and Revolution.” Holding this exhibition in Shibuya, Japan—a city full of energy and cultural creation—was a natural choice. I believe this event is significant not only for the future of street art but also for the emerging urban art scene. I hope this exhibition will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the history of street art.
Patrizia Cattaneo Moresi (Chief Curator)
The exhibition is an expanded version of “BANKSY & STREET ART (R)EVOLUTION,” which was held at the Ehime Prefectural Art Museum from September to November 2024, with additional works included. After its run in Tokyo, the exhibition is scheduled to tour Europe.
