“The Holdovers” will open in theaters nationwide on Friday, June 21.
Set in 1970 at Barton School in New England, the film tells the story of three lonely students who, for different reasons, remain in their dormitory to spend Christmas and New Year’s, and build a small bond with each other through small mishaps and adventures that occur in the empty school. Directed by Alexander Payne, who won the “Academy Award” for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Sideways” and “The Family Tree. The screenplay was written by David Hemmingson, who also planned the drama “Kitchen Confidential.
Paul Giamatti as Paul Hannam, a part-time ancient history teacher who teaches by old values and is hated by students and teachers alike, and Davine Joy Randolph as Mary Lamb, the school’s head cook who lost her only son, Curtis, in Vietnam, a troublemaker but not a bad-hearted Barton School student Angus Tully was played by Dominic Sessa. This is the first time that star Paul Giamatti and director Alexander Payne have teamed up since “Sideways,” released in 2004.
The film won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical/Comedy at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, and is nominated in five categories at the 96th Academy Awards, which will be announced on March 10 (Sunday): Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress.
