The special exhibition “AQUIRAX UNO: Akihito Uno Exhibition” is set to take place at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in Hatsudai, Tokyo, from April 11 (Thursday) to June 16 (Sunday).
AQUIRAX UNO is an illustrator and graphic designer born in Nagoya. He played a leading role in popularizing the terms “illustration” and “illustrator” in Japan during the 1960s. In 1999, he was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal, and in 2010, he received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
In recent years, he has gained recognition for his designs of album covers and merchandise for artists such as SHAKALABBITS, BUCK-TICK, and Ringo Sheena. His collection of artwork titled ‘Kaleidoscope,’ which includes pieces inspired by haiku, and his portrait generator “Majoliga” for Shiseido’s “Majolica Majorca” are notable projects. Even at the age of 90 in 2024, Uno continues his creative pursuits.
The exhibition “AQUIRAX UNO: Akihito Uno Retrospective” will cover Uno’s works from his early career to his latest creations, featuring over 900 pieces in the largest-scale exhibition to date. This marks his first major solo exhibition in Tokyo, showcasing original artworks, posters, stage set designs, and short animated films.
