“The Work of Shiro KURAMATA: A Microcosmos of Memory” will be held at the Setagaya Art Museum in Kinuta Park, Tokyo, from November 18 (Sat) to January 28 (Sun), 2024.
Shiro Kuramata is a designer who has created store designs for restaurants and clothing stores, as well as creative furniture. He also attracted international attention for his use of industrial materials such as acrylic, glass, and aluminum for building materials, which were not conventionally used in the world of furniture and interior design.
This exhibition, held more than 30 years after his sudden death in 1991, is a retrospective of Kuramata’s achievements, including materials that have rarely been shown to the public. The exhibition will be divided into four parts, beginning with Kuramata’s time at San’ai Co. In addition, Kuramata’s treasured books and records, dream diaries and image sketches that form the background of his work, and Kuramata’s own words will also be introduced.
Tickets for the exhibition will be on sale at etix from November 1 (Wed.). The exhibition is scheduled to tour to the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto in 2024.
