A Deep Dive into Gallé’s Life and Legacy: Fall in Love with Gallé All Over Again
It seems that many visitors, so mesmerized by the exhibits, have been getting so close that they’ve ended up bumping their noses against the glass cases. Meanwhile, the cleaning staff, armed with cloths in both hands, have been diligently wiping down the cases with care (thank you!). Gallé’s delicate creations possess such an irresistible allure that it’s easy to see why people get so captivated and drawn into them.

Finally, I’d like to touch on the unique initiative of “Silent Viewing Time” at this exhibition. While the exhibition generally allows photography (still images only), one hour at the beginning of each day is designated as “Silent Viewing Time.” During this period, both photography and conversation are strictly prohibited, allowing visitors to engage with the artworks in complete silence. This concept was introduced to accommodate both those who wish to take photographs of the pieces they encounter and those who want to engage more stoically and personally with the works. What a wonderful idea! I truly hope other exhibitions adopt this approach as well!

“120th Anniversary of Emile Gallé’s Passing: The Paris of Longing” is being held at the Suntory Museum of Art until Sunday, April 13, 2025. Surrounded by Gallé’s masterpieces, your eyes will certainly be delighted, but the reason your heart will feel fulfilled goes beyond that. By focusing on Gallé through the lens of the Paris Exposition, this exhibition provides a deep understanding of how a single artist evolved his creativity and the backdrop that influenced it as he navigated through his era. I truly believe that anyone who visits will leave with an even greater admiration for Emile Gallé. I encourage you to take the opportunity to visit and experience it for yourself.
