Perfume are set to bring their story to the big screen with the documentary film “Perfume ‘Cold Sleep’ –25 Years Document–,” which will open in theaters on May 15. The announcement arrives with the release of a first teaser trailer, a teaser visual, and newly shared comments from the members and the film’s director.
The film captures a pivotal moment in the group’s history. In 2025, as Perfume marked both their 25th anniversary as a group and 20 years since their major-label debut, the trio stunned fans by announcing their entry into “Cold Sleep” on September 21—their exact debut anniversary. The revelation came just ahead of their long-awaited return to Tokyo Dome, their first shows there in five years, making the documentary a record of both celebration and suspension at a defining crossroads in their career.

The film follows Perfume closely in the period surrounding the announcement, documenting what became their final live performance before entering Cold Sleep: “Perfume ZO/Z5 Anniversary ‘Nebula Romance’ Episode TOKYO DOME.” Alongside footage from that landmark show, the documentary looks back on the 25-year journey of a~chan, Kashiyuka, and Nocchi through extensive never-before-seen material. It also goes behind the scenes after the announcement and features exclusive individual interviews, exploring what has changed over a quarter century, what has remained constant, and the feelings the three members are sharing about the present for the very first time.
The film is directed by Taketoshi Sado, a documentary filmmaker known for his long career at NHK and for works including “WE ARE Perfume -WORLD TOUR 3rd DOCUMENT-,” “NO SMOKING’, ‘SAYONARA AMERICA,” “LiSA Another Great Day,” and “Quruli no Eiga.” Having observed Perfume for many years, Sado brings a deeply informed perspective to capturing where the trio stand today.
In the newly released teaser footage, the film opens with a~chan confiding in the live production staff about the decision to enter Cold Sleep, before cutting to scenes of each member reflecting on their careers and lives, offering an intimate glimpse into the thoughts behind one of the most significant moments in Perfume’s history.
Comments
A-chan
“I truly believe this is a real documentary. An event no one could have predicted happened, and the film captures exactly why we chose cold sleep, what intentions were behind it, and the many conversations that led us there. It’s filled with our unfiltered truth.
We didn’t decide on cold sleep because there was a film. Rather, it felt like a series of small miracles overlapping at the moment of our 25th anniversary. I think the director was able to capture that instant, and the genuine backstage reality of it. I also hope people will see not only us, but the staff who support us and help build Perfume behind the scenes. I want audiences to witness the unseen people who make Perfume what it is.”
Kashiyuka
“At first, this wasn’t the direction the project was meant to take. We’d been followed since 2019 in the lead-up to our 25th anniversary, so my initial reaction was simply happiness like, ‘We get to make another film!’ Through many conversations together, we arrived at the decision to enter cold sleep. Having that exact moment documented made me genuinely glad.
I think the film shows the true core of our group why we were able to decide to enter cold sleep, and why now. It reflects how each of us has looked at Perfume in our own way. I really hope people will stay with us until the very end and see it through.”
Nocchi
“They’ve been filming us for a long time, and partway through, so many things started happening that I honestly still don’t know what kind of edit it will become. But I feel they’ve captured us as we really are. I’m excited to see how people will receive it.
This decision to enter cold sleep is also a challenge for us. We talked about it endlessly, just the three of us, before reaching that choice. Our fans already understand that this was a carefully considered decision, and now I’m looking forward to seeing how they feel after watching the film.”
Director Taketoshi Sado
“What began as a seemingly ‘ordinary’ documentary marking Perfume’s 25th anniversary unexpectedly became a film about cold sleep. This is documentary filmmaking in its purest, unvarnished form.
After moving forward with unwavering honesty for years, the three of them finally stop and turn their gaze inward. I hope audiences will be there to witness that moment. This is not only their story it is also the story of anyone who has faced each day with sincerity and kept moving forward.”
