Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, renowned for his works Drive My Car and Evil Does Not Exist, has revealed the production of his latest film, ‘‘All of a Sudden.’ The project is an international co-production involving France, Japan, Germany, and Belgium, and is set to explore deeply personal themes of illness and human connection.
The film is based on the correspondence between philosopher Maoko Miyano, who lived through cancer metastasis, and anthropologist Maho Isono, who spent years researching clinical settings. Their letters, which formed the basis of a book titled ‘Suddenly Sick’, detail a profound exchange spanning two decades of academic work and personal experience. The story is a poignant reflection on life, death, and the ties that bind individuals through shared struggles.
The narrative unfolds in the suburbs of Paris, where Marie-Lou Fontaine, the head of a care facility, meets Japanese theater director Mari Morisaki. Their unexpected connection, sparked by the coincidence of their similarly sounding names, marks the beginning of an intimate and transformative relationship. The plot follows Mari’s sudden illness, which deepens the bond between the two women, as they navigate the complexities of life and death together.
The film stars internationally acclaimed actress Virginie Efira as Marie-Lou, known for her César Award-winning role in ‘Elle’, and Japanese actress Tao Okamoto (TAO) as Mari. Tao, who has had a successful career as a top model, also brings her experience as a filmmaker and actor to this deeply emotional role.
Further details about the film are expected as production progresses.
