OBSG, the acclaimed Korean neo-folk band, will bring their unique blend of traditional Korean folk and psychedelic sounds to Japan on May 15 (Thursday). Known for their innovative fusion of folk music with reggae, disco, funk, rock, and blues, OBSG has captivated audiences with their genre-defying style. The band’s music is a colorful mix of cultural influences, combining the roots of traditional folk with modern experimental sounds.
The 10-member band, led by Lee Heemoon, is celebrated for its dynamic arrangements and boundary-pushing performances. Alongside Heemoon, OBSG features bassist Noh Seon-teck, who has performed at prestigious events like the FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL, and members from the bands Heosongsewol and the duo NomNom. Their sound is deeply rooted in Korean folk traditions, but it branches out into multiple genres, creating a vibrant and psychedelic listening experience.
In 2023, OBSG released their latest album “SPANGLE”, which received praise for its adventurous musical direction. Following the album’s release, the band toured Germany and France, bringing their energetic performances to international audiences. Their December 2023 performance on Tiny Desk Korea earned more than 450,000 views, further solidifying their place as one of the most exciting acts in the global folk scene.
OBSG’s upcoming Japan performance marks another major milestone for the band. They will perform under the name OBSG 4BS as part of the Kankankan Cabaret event, hosted by Tsukimi Ru Kimosu in Aoyama, Tokyo. The event will also feature a diverse lineup, including the Nakanishi Lemon & Suzume no Tears trio, led by Nakanishi Lemon, a key figure in the Bon-Odori movement, as well as folk singer Miyuki Sato and Agasa, known for their work with Balkan folk music. Additionally, Latin dance band DF7B and DJ Hajime Oishi, a roots music expert, will also perform.
Tickets for the event are now available through Tsukimi Ru Kimosu’s official website and e+ platforms. The full event timetable will be announced soon. Don’t miss the chance to experience OBSG’s distinctive fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds live in Tokyo!
