Kaho Nakamura’s Current Aspirations: Desire to Explore Musicals

Since we have the opportunity, could you both share the highlights of The Metamorphosis of a Living Room?

Okada: As I mentioned earlier, when we refer to it as a musical, it tends to take on a theatrical appearance. The power of music is so significant that, in an extreme sense, you could see it as theater being topped with music.

Nakamura: I believe this is a work that makes it clear from the moment the performance begins that “We are in this emotional place right now.” It feels like a rather rare performance where music functions in this way. Additionally, I find it remarkable that the impression remains similar whether your eyes are closed or open. Even though I saw it a long time ago, I can still recall that sensation.

Okada: Thank you very much.

I think there aren’t many theater fans who are used to watching chamber music performances, so that alone makes it feel fresh. Personally, I’d love for fans of groups like the Kronos Quartet to see it.

Okada: Exactly. I hope that theater fans will also look forward to the music. Additionally, I think it would be great if music fans came as well. After all, it’s being performed by Ensemble Nomad with compositions by Fujikura… It’s a simple thought, but I really believe it.

Okada: By the way, Nakamura, have you considered acting on stage?

Nakamura: Ten years ago, I wasn’t interested, but now I am. Back then, I sang too emotionally and couldn’t control myself, but now I feel like I’ve changed a bit…

Oh, regarding that, tofubeats mentioned in his song “FANTASY CLUB” (2023), which features your vocals, that you have become more refined. He said, “Nakamura might seem a bit free-spirited and like a genius, but I think her technique has improved significantly over the years.”

Nakamura: I’m so glad to hear that! Ten years ago, a friend told me, “I hope Kaho-chan’s singing will be a bit more rounded in ten years,” and I was really annoyed at that time. I thought, “I’m at my best now!” [laughs]. But now, after ten years, I can see how my voice works from a more objective perspective and feel like I have more control over myself, so I agree with that. Back then, I felt that “being rounded means becoming restricted,” and I was scared of that. I thought being out of control was cooler.

is it because you’ve changed in that way that you’re now interested in challenging yourself on stage?

Nakamura: Yes, I have an interest. Definitely. I want to pursue it directly. I don’t even know how far I can move my body, but I really want to give it a try.

Okada: Let’s do a musical! A Nakamura Kaho musical.

I would absolutely go see that
