Filmmaker/director Kosaku Shimamoto’s monozukuri is to “somehow bring the one back to zero”.

#MUSIC

Instead of making one from zero, I managed to bring one back to zero.

Celeina:Did you have a strong desire to actually make things with your own hands?

Shimamoto:It sounds cool when you put it like that, but in reality, I thought that I could only make things with my own hands. Also, when people think of “monodzukuri,” they generally have the impression of “making something from zero to one,” but in my case, it’s more like “somehow bringing the one back to zero.

Takano: What do you mean?

Shimamoto: Like “making it meaningless.

Takano: No, no. It’s like I understand it, but I don’t understand it (laughs).

Celeina: By the way, I understand that you also produce music.

Shimamoto: BERVATRA, which you introduced at the beginning. This is a unit with Shinichi Suda (friend #3), who also works as a musician and Twoth.

Takano: I am curious about them and would like to listen to them together.

Celeina: What sound is this recorded?

Shimamoto: This is a time signal (☎︎117). BERVATRA is a project based on sampling, making music on the spot. I improvised this piece by recording a time signal with a microphone, looping and layering the recorded sound, and further processing it.

Celeina:Do you remember the inspiration you had when you actually wrote this song?

Shimamoto:No, I didn’t have any inspiration. Even when I looped the sound, a voice kept repeating, “This is 36 minutes and 50 seconds. It’s not music, so I just kept repeating, “I’m going to announce 36 minutes and 50 seconds. I was just desperately trying to make it sound like music. I was just desperately trying to make something change. I felt like I was just sorting out the traffic. I’ve never done that before, but traffic control.

Celeina: You are listening to a song by BERVATRA, and the name of the song is “ENIGMA LIST”.

Shimamoto: The English word for time signal is TIME SIGNAL, so I decided on “ENIGMA LIST” as an anagram of that. I just wanted to rearrange the letters in the same way as the sound, and the song titles have no particular meaning.
