Refreshed by surfing and inspired by contemporary art

Celeina:I see. But I understand that you are very busy and move around a lot. Do you have your own way of using your time and refreshing yourself?

Sugawara: Well, basically, I have good friends who support me, which is a prerequisite, but the building is located in the center of the city or in a village, but my hobby is surfing, so when I need to switch gears, I immerse myself in nature, forget about everything, and detoxify my digital life. I consider such time to be quite important, and I try to create such opportunities as much as possible.

Celeina: Surfing sounds great.

Sugawara: Yes. It’s refreshing.

Celeina: We understand that you also enjoy viewing art. Are there any artworks that you have seen recently?

Sugawara: As I mentioned earlier, I like to connect different things together, and in that sense, I really like contemporary art. I especially share the feeling of finding new perspectives in contemporary art, and I often go to see art that combines natural coincidences and human-made regularities, or art that is created together with nature, with a little human intervention. Recently, I visited the atelier in Saitama of Yujin Kangawa, who runs an artist studio called EUGENE STUDIO, which had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, with a group of about 10 friends of mine. For example, there is a sheet of paper painted in one color, but by changing the way it is placed and changing the speed at which it fades in the sunlight, we could create a blurred difference in color and make a painting out of it. I came back very impressed by the way you took a positive view of the coincidence of human-made and natural phenomena and their deterioration, and how neither nature alone nor human beings alone can do it, and how it is only possible when the two are together.

Celeina: It seems that this way of thinking is also connected to architecture.

Sugawara: Yes, that’s right. I live in a house that looks rusty, but in fact I have wrapped it in plaster mixed with iron powder, and I let the rusting vary depending on the air, wind, rain, and sun. I set the rules, but in the end, nature and the grime of daily life will be applied, and that itself will create the appearance of the house, as I experiment with it at home.

Takano: That sounds great. You can also enjoy the changes over time.

Celeina:Thank you very much for sharing your story. As part of the “FIST BUMP” project, you introduce your friends to us through the “circle of friends” connected by the Goo Touch.

Sugawara: I have a lot of very interesting friends, and I was wondering who I should choose, but I would like to introduce two of them, Mr. Kamijo and Mr. Fukushima of Kamijo & Fukushima Urban Design Office.

Celeina: If you had to sum it up in one word, how would you describe them?

Sugawara: If I had to describe them in one word, I would say they are “young hopefuls who design for the earth.”

Takano: That’s a good copy. Thank you very much. Tomorrow, I will connect you to Mr. Kamijo and Mr. Fukushima of Kamijo & Fukushima Urban Design Office.

Celeina:FIST BUMP, today we welcome architect Daisuke Sugawara. Thank you very much.
