Halley Discusses the Background of Rich Sound and a Globally Recognized Sensibility

His Dream was to Work for the United Nations

-Thank you very much for your wonderful story. I am convinced that this kind of music is created because you are facing your dream. By the way, what are you studying at university now?

Taehyung: I am studying “Global Studies” in the School of Global Studies, and I am studying international politics. I originally wanted to work at the United Nations. That was my dream.

-Taehyung: I’ve lived in many different countries!

Taehyung: While living in various countries, there were times when I felt mentally lost in terms of my identity. My personal answer was to identify myself as “one of the world,” and I thought that rather than having my roots in one country, my life would be richer if I could see the globe as one and identify myself as a “human being. That’s when I decided to study international politics at the United Nations.

-Now, have you decided to give up your dream of the UN and pursue a career in music?

Taehyung: When I was in Corona, I thought, “I have to be in music. During Corona, I was doing music as much as I was studying, so I was leaning more and more toward music. I thought it was better to do something I was good at. It is equally difficult to succeed in music and in the UN, so I thought it would be better to go for something I was good at and enjoyed a little bit, so I chose music.

I don’t think -HALLEY is a band that plays music that stays in one country, but what do you want to do in the future?

Taehyung：I would like us to be a band where each member is involved in their own activities and can come back to HALLEY with their own will. I would like to continue to have each member take influences from various places and bring them back to HALLEY.

Haru is a potter, Shin supports Laura day romance, Tsugu says he wants to go to America and play at a church, and Naoto says he wants to write his own songs. But for now, I’m going to work hard on the band. But for now, we are all talking about doing our best as a band and making it through to the album first.

-Taehyung: Yes, there is.

Taehyung: Yes, there are. The most important thing is that I think WONK’s formation is wonderful. (Each member of WONK is involved in a wide range of activities, including solo projects, theatrical accompaniment, research in art education, game music production, producing, engineering, cooking, restaurant production, acting, etc., and the members run their own company. Crossover Study Group, and I have played there once, and there is a “Waseda-Keio” game, so I think Waseda and Keio have a close relationship.

-Last but not least, can you tell us the origin of the band name “HALLEY”?

Taehyung: To begin with, because I love black music, I am very conscious of being a yellow person. So I took the letter “YELLOW” and made it “YELLA,” then took the “H” from the musical symbol “Selah” from the Psalms of the Bible and made it “YELLAH,” and then turned it upside down. Then I turned it upside down and thought, “That’s good, because it also means a comet that appears once every 70 years. That is the origin of HALLEY.
