Fresh and Sharp Sounds Grounded in Tradition
Interestingly, many jazz recordings from the mid-1980s to around 2010 are available only on CD. Some labels still haven’t released their music for streaming, and numerous albums appear unlikely to be reissued. Additionally, obtaining these CDs can be quite difficult. Nowadays, CDs are becoming as scarce as vinyl records. Since Toshima, the owner, says he collects CDs from his favorite artists, Whiska features a selection of rare CDs as well. I was especially taken aback by the collection of Woody Shaw CDs. They sometimes play live albums that can be quite challenging to listen to, which really strikes a chord with me.

The volume is kept soft, and the CD covers are discreetly displayed around the bar. The music is played with such modesty that it creates a relaxed atmosphere for enjoying whiskey, yet the exquisite selection can effortlessly draw your ear. While it embodies the traditional essence of jazz, the music also showcases a sharpness and freshness distinctive to the post-1980s era, crafting a vibe that feels entirely devoid of nostalgia. Whiska truly illustrates how wonderfully this music complements whiskey, surpassing all expectations.
