Bunkamura Produce 2026 will present the world premiere of Marcos Morau’s new Bunraku-inspired production, The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, at Tokyo’s Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Playhouse from August to September 2026.
The production reimagines Yukio Mishima’s novel through a “new Bunraku” where dancers and puppets share the stage. Morau, a celebrated choreographer and artistic director frequently invited to Europe’s top performing arts festivals, directs the piece in an international co-production with his company, La Veronal.
Morau has long been inspired by Mishima’s work, tracing back to his viewing of MISHIMA: A Life in Four Chapters (1985, dir. Paul Schrader). In this innovative Bunraku, actors embody puppets with their own bodies, performing alongside La Veronal dancers, European composers, and Japanese musicians. The result blurs the lines between puppeteer and puppet, fusing tradition and contemporary performance into a singular, mesmerizing stage experience.
Full performance details will be announced in February 2026.
