A24’s Marty Supreme is set for release in Japan in March 2026.
Directed by Josh Safdie, who earned a Critics’ Choice nomination for Uncut Gems (2019), the film marks his first solo project since The Pleasure of Being Robbed (2008). Safdie is known for co-directing films with his brother Benny as the Safdie Brothers.
Set in 1950s New York, the story is inspired by the life of real-life table tennis player Marty Reisman. The protagonist, Marty Mouse, is a brilliant table tennis player aiming for global recognition in a sport largely ignored in the U.S. While working at a relative’s shoe store to fund his participation in the World Championships, Marty loses to a Japanese player in London. Determined to claim the world title, he sets his sights on the championship in Japan, finding inventive ways to raise the necessary funds.
Timothée Chalamet stars as Marty, drawing attention at the New York Film Festival for his portrayal of a charming yet morally flexible character willing to bend the rules to achieve his goals. Gwyneth Paltrow returns to the screen after six years, playing retired actress Kay. Grammy-winning artist Tyler, The Creator makes his acting debut as Marty’s friend, while Odessa A’zion plays Marty’s love interest, and Kevin O’Leary portrays Milton, Kay’s husband and an ink company president.
Filming in Japan also features Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics table tennis representative Kōto Kawaguchi (Toyota Motor) as Marty’s rival Endo. The climactic table tennis matches promise to be a highlight of the film.
