Leos Carax’s 1991 film “The Lovers on the Bridge” will receive a 4K restored theatrical release starting, December 20.
Set on Paris’s oldest bridge, the Pont Neuf, which had been closed for construction, the film tells a heartrending love story between two homeless individuals. Alex, a lonely street performer plagued by insomnia, and Michel, an art student who has run away after heartbreak and a threatening eye condition that could leave her blind, fall passionately in love atop the isolated bridge. Alex is played by Denis Lavant, while Michel is portrayed by Juliette Binoche.
During filming, permission to close the real Pont Neuf for an extended period was denied. To recreate the bridge and surrounding streets, Carax built one of the largest open sets in French film history. The production’s extravagant episodes and enormous budget became legendary, and the film enjoyed a 27-week run at Cinema Rise Shibuya when it was released in Japan in 1992.
Alongside the announcement, a teaser and new stills have been released. The teaser shows Alex steering a stolen boat while Michel water-skis across the Seine under fireworks on Bastille Day. The stills capture the couple dancing together atop the Pont Neuf.
