Kenshi Yonezu’s song “1991” has been selected as the theme for the live-action film ”5 Centimeters per Second,” which will be released on Friday, October 10.
The film is directed by visual director and photographer Yoshiyuki Okuyama and is based on Makoto Shinkai’s 2007 animated feature ”5 Centimeters per Second.” Yonezu, who was born in 1991, was deeply influenced in his teenage years by both the original animation and Shinkai’s novel adaptation. In the story, the two main characters, Takaki Tōno and Akari Shinohara, also first meet in 1991. Drawing on this resonance, Yonezu created the theme by placing himself in the position of the protagonist while remaining faithful to the atmosphere of the original work.
Director Okuyama also shares the same birth year of 1991, bringing together two artists of the same generation to collaborate through film and music.
A trailer featuring the song “1991” has also been released.
