The Japanese release date for Wes Anderson’s latest film, ‘The Phoenician Scheme,’ has been set for September 19, 2025. Known for his distinct filmmaking style in hits like ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ and ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel,’ Anderson’s newest project is a black comedy that has already been officially selected for the Competition section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
The film follows billionaire Zaza Korda, who names Liesel, the daughter of a nun, as his successor. As Korda travels across Europe to seek investments for a new business venture, he becomes embroiled in a series of events, including a plot to have him assassinated. The movie explores the darkly comic repercussions of Korda’s decisions, unfolding against the backdrop of European travel.
Benicio del Toro stars as Zaza Korda, while Liesel is played by Mia Slea-Pretton, the daughter of actress Kate Winslet. The film also features Michael Cera and Riz Ahmed in their first roles in a Wes Anderson film. Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, and Benedict Cumberbatch round out the impressive cast.
