The special exhibition “Godzilla 70th Anniversary: Godzilla THE Art Exhibition” opened on April 26 (Saturday) at the Mori Arts Center Gallery on the 52nd floor of the Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo. The exhibition will run until June 29 (Sunday).
This large-scale exhibition celebrates Godzilla’s 70th anniversary in 2024, exploring the iconic monster’s evolution across various eras and its depiction by different directors. It showcases Godzilla through a diverse range of artworks beyond the confines of cinema. Nearly 30 artists, including Tadanori Yokoo, Mikan Fukuda, O JUN, Kikuji Kawada, Kosuke Kawamura, and Tadanobu Asano, will present their interpretations of the question “What is Godzilla?” through new art pieces. Additionally, the exhibition features dioramas that merge Godzilla and art, along with special videos created by Taichi Kimura, offering a fresh perspective on the legendary creature.
I created this piece staying true to the image I’ve always had of Godzilla as the ultimate, most powerful creature.
I believe I was able to bring a filmmaker’s unique perspective to it — through fast-paced cuts and abstract angles not typically seen in past Godzilla works.— Taichi Kimura
At the preview event held on Friday, April 25 — the day before the official opening — attendees included curator Qiu Qiu Jin (Kin Shūu), and participating artists O JUN, Natsumi Aoyagi, Sachiko Kazama, Tokyo Build, and Motohiko Odani.
Jin commented:
“I’ve long been moved by the avant-garde expression and powerful message of the original 1954 Godzilla. Born in an era when film and art deeply influenced each other, Godzilla is a work that truly deserves to be discussed in the language of art. I believe each visitor will walk away with their own answer to the question, ‘What is Godzilla?’”
She added, “I hope everyone who visits will encounter their own version of Godzilla in this space, where special effects art and contemporary art intersect.”
