A24’s psychological thriller ”A Different Man”, starring Sebastian Stan, is officially set to premiere in Japan on Friday, July 11. Alongside the release announcement, the film’s official trailer, poster visual, and a selection of still images have been made public.
Directed by Aaron Schimberg (”Chained for Life”), ”A Different Man” follows Edward, an aspiring actor with a severe facial disfigurement who lives a quiet, withdrawn life. After undergoing an extreme and experimental medical procedure, he emerges with a dramatically altered appearance—one that finally allows him to live the life he’s long yearned for. But just as Edward begins to find success as a new man, his world is upended by the sudden appearance of Oswald, a charismatic and socially gifted man who eerily resembles Edward’s former self.
This chilling “life-reversal” thriller explores identity, transformation, and the unsettling territory between reality and reinvention. Edward is played by Sebastian Stan, with Renate Reinsve (”The Worst Person in the World”) co-starring as Ingrid, a playwright who lives next door and becomes a key figure in Edward’s emotional journey. Oswald is portrayed by Adam Pearson, who previously collaborated with Schimberg on ”Chained for Life”.
The film has already garnered critical acclaim. At the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, Stan won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance. He also took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. Additionally, ”A Different Man” received a nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 97th Academy Awards, recognizing the transformative physical elements at the heart of the film.
The newly released trailer gives a glimpse into Edward’s inner struggle—his hesitation to pursue his dreams or confess his feelings for Ingrid, due to past trauma and a deep insecurity about his appearance. The tone shifts in the latter half as we witness his bold new life unravel with the arrival of Oswald, whose charm threatens to eclipse Edward entirely. Scenes of Oswald gaining favor with Ingrid and stepping into the spotlight underscore the film’s central tension and emotional stakes.
