Emerald’s single “Pendulum” was released on February 28 (Wed.) and its music video is now available on YouTube.
Emerald, formed in 2011, is a six-piece band consisting of Yosuke Nakano (Vo), Yoshitaka Isono (Gt), Tomoyuki Fujii (Ba), Tatsuto Nakamura (Key), Yo Takagi (Dr), and Kenji Fujii (Manipulator). The band plays unique city pop music that combines the sounds of jazz, neo-soul, and AOR with the context of Japanese pop music, and in 2018, “Moonlight” from their first mini-album “On Your Mind” was selected for the power play on all radio stations. In 2023, they performed at the outdoor festival “ONE MUSIC CAMP” in Hyogo, Japan, and the “TAMATAMA FESTIVAL” organized by WACK and NiEW.
Named “Pendulum,” meaning “pendulum,” the song depicts people’s daily lives and how they sometimes swing. Following on from the previous album, “You & I,” the song features Etsuko of DADARAY on chorus and Yusuke of TAMTAM on guitar, and was mixed and mastered by Daisuke Yamashita, who also engineered Emerald’s first and second albums. Daisuke Yamashita, who also engineered Emerald’s first and second albums, was in charge of mixing and mastering.
The music video was directed by eiji okamura, as was the music video for “Rakuen” released in 2023. The music video features ballet dancer Mayuko Yoshioka, and expresses a world of emotional turmoil.
Nakano’s comment on the occasion of the release has also been released.
We are living in the midst of our destiny, swaying like Furiko Pendulum.
We are bound by our destiny and suffer from the belief that “this is the way it should be” or “this is the way it must be,” or we are trapped in an obsessive desire to “know the truth” about other people or society, which is elusive. As I faced the song, I felt that it would be good to let go of these things for a moment and try to envision a place and time that is truly comfortable for me, without worrying about what other people think.
Both “You & I” and “Pendulum” are an attempt to incorporate “overlapping” with others in the songs. Therefore, I try to incorporate melodic exchanges into the songs. That force that tries to go outside of SADAME also creates ripples and energy inside of SADAME and changes it. It is such an ambitious song. I believe that this song has become Emerald’s song to grow and change along with the music. We would be happy if this song could accompany you in your days of facing your own fate.
