The Future of Nagisa Murakami: “Trusting Others and Opening Herself”
How do you feel about the final version of “Uraniwa”?
Murakami: In a good way, it doesn’t feel like my song.
Abe: Really? That’s interesting.
Murakami: I was surprised that I could make such a fun song. With my solo performances, I usually feel like I’m in dialogue with myself, so I tend to dive deep into the song. But with this one, I naturally felt joyful and found myself moving to the rhythm while listening, which I haven’t experienced much with my own songs. I think that’s something Abe helped bring out. The recording was fun from the start, and when I listened to the finished track with all the elements coming together, I was amazed at how naturally I was able to enjoy it. With “Riyuu wa Nai,” we all went deep together, but with “Uraniwa,” I felt more open and found myself enjoying it effortlessly.

Abe: I think Nagisa’s songs can change a lot depending on the arrangement, so I completely understand the “diving deep” part. But music also has that “fun” or pleasurable aspect, and I think it can open up and burst outward. If we could do that in a live setting, Nagisa’s story could expand even further. But it was also really scary. I kept thinking, “What if they say, ‘I don’t like this normal version’?” [laughs]. I had a lot of doubts, but I really like it, so I’m really glad if Nagisa liked it too.

You guys learned a lot about each other this time, so if you guys do something together again, maybe Abe could take even more bold approaches next time.
Abe: As I mentioned earlier, I’m really curious to hear Nagisa doing funk and soul. Her voice is great, so it would probably fit any genre. But I’ve always been interested in what would happen if Nagisa stepped outside the folk framework and explored something different.
What are your future plans?
Murakami: My approach will remain the same—I create songs for myself and sing for myself, and I hope that through this process, I can connect with others. However, I also feel a strong desire to open new drawers within myself and encounter different aspects of who I am, just like I did this time. In the past, I was very focused on the idea of “I want to create everything on my own,” which made it difficult for me to accept the involvement of others. I often found myself wondering, “Will this person truly listen to my songs and cherish them?” But through my solo performances, I’ve gradually come to enjoy the process of opening up. So now, I’m in a place where I want to trust both others and myself, and try to discover new sides of myself. As a first step, I was able to make music with trusted people like Abe-san and others, and moving forward, I want to continue opening up without fear and embrace new parts of myself.
