Tomakomai Day 2

The next day, around midday, Kato came to pick me up. We hopped in the car and set off for a seafood bowl restaurant that was known for being both affordable and delicious, but unfortunately, it was closed that day.

Since I was really in the mood for a seafood bowl, I felt a bit let down, but I quickly bounced back and went to a market near the port to have some miso-hokki ramen. It was delicious. I discovered that Tomakomai is well-known for its hokki clams. After that, we headed to the beach. It was a swimming-prohibited area, and the waves crashing against the shore were strong and rough. I thought to myself that swimming in such conditions would be quite perilous.

After that, we made our way to the Tomakomai Civic Center. There was a meeting scheduled for event stakeholders, and as it neared 2 PM, people began to trickle in. It was mostly the same crowd I had met the day before. They were chatting cheerfully, discussing plans to set up the stage here and designate this as the main entrance. I couldn’t help but think they all looked like really cool delinquents. Delinquents are different from DQN; they are street-savvy individuals who adhere to a code based on aesthetics and values, skilled in various pursuits, and full of wit and courage. Kato remarked with a smile, “This group is really dependable, isn’t it?”

I also had the opportunity to tour the main hall, which will serve as the main stage, and it exceeded my expectations. The venue was classically majestic while also exuding a touch of luxury, creating a truly magical atmosphere. It felt incredibly sad to think that such a remarkable space could be demolished, and I imagined how incredible it would be to see an EGO-WRAPPIN’ concert there.

Once the meeting concluded around 4 PM, we made our way to ROOM. This space is owned by a club called ROOTS and has been converted into a studio for practice and events by the local band BANGLANG. I stopped by to greet them and take a look since Sato, who was filming BANGLANG’s music video over the past couple of days, was involved. I won’t share too many details as it’s better left as a surprise for later, but it definitely seemed like an intriguing music video was coming together.

The vocalist, Taiharu, perched on his scooter, exuded a glow reminiscent of 1980s male idols. He wasn’t conventionally handsome, but the label “handsome” suited him perfectly. I managed to step inside ROOTS for a moment, and it had a genuinely cool ambiance. The solid black decor paired with a dance-friendly wooden floor gave off a vibe of a legendary venue. Additionally, there was a painting that seemed to mimic the style of Ernie Barnes, known for the cover of Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You,” which contributed to the venue’s coolness. I’ve heard great things about the sound quality, so I’d love to visit sometime.

In the end, Kato drove me to the station. During the ride, he played a mix of NOT WONK’s new song that had just arrived. The bass-less track was filled with a holy, hymn-like atmosphere and felt quietly innovative. Under the high summer sky, the setting sun began to paint the town of Tomakomai in a soft golden hue. As I gazed out the passenger window at the passing scenery, we listened to the song in silence. It felt just like a movie ending. The scene was almost too perfect, making me feel a bit shy, but it also filled me with a refreshing sense of joy. Just as the song wrapped up, we arrived at the station, and we got out of the car to part ways.

“I’m looking forward to the report.”

“Yeah. Let’s meet again.”

We shook hands, and I went through the ticket gate, waiting for the train on the platform. I thought about how much fun I had and whether this could really be considered work. So, I struck a classic pose, placing my fingertips on my crown and lifting one leg, saying, “Isn’t this great?”
