Joachim Trier returns with his latest masterpiece, “Sentimental Value,” hitting Japanese theaters on February 20, 2026. Following his acclaimed “The Worst Person in the World,” the film stars Renate Reinsve as Nora, an actress confronting her estranged father, director Gustav, played by Stellan Skarsgård, who abandoned his family years ago. The story dives into the tangled web of love, resentment, and family ties when Gustav offers Nora the lead in his first autobiographical film in 15 years. Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas also join the cast.
The film made waves at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in 2025, earning a 19-minute standing ovation and the Grand Prix, and has been chosen as Norway’s official Academy Awards submission. In Japan, it will be distributed by GAGA under their new arthouse label NOROSHI, serving as the label’s debut release.
The newly released teaser trailer opens with a tense exchange: Gustav tells Nora, “You are the greatest treasure of my life,” and she fires back, “Then why did you abandon me?” The footage also hints at family struggles, rivalries, and Elle Fanning’s character stepping into Nora’s role, promising a powerful, emotionally charged cinematic experience.
