Haruki Murakami’s Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is set to hit the stage in January 2026—and the production is going global. The upcoming world tour will take the play to Singapore, China, London, and Paris.
Based on Murakami’s fourth novel, the story weaves together two parallel narratives. In The End of the World, a character known as “I” arrives in a quiet town walled off from the outside world and works as a “dreamreader,” slowly uncovering the town’s secrets. Meanwhile, Hard-Boiled Wonderland follows a “Calculator” who embarks on a mysterious urban adventure after being commissioned by a mysterious professor. The narratives intertwine, building toward a surprising climax.
The lead role of the Calculator will be played by Tatsuya Fujiwara, with Nozomi Morita portraying the librarian who captures his heart. The dual role of “I” will be shared by Aota Komagine and Ryuunosuke Shimamura. Philippe Decouflé, famed for directing the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, will handle direction and choreography.
The world tour kicks off in Singapore in April 2026, followed by China in July with performances scheduled in Shanghai, Beijing, and Suzhou, before heading to London and Paris in October. Specific details for the China leg will be announced later.

The Japanese run of the stage production will take place from January 10 to February 1, 2026, at the Playhouse of Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Following this, performances will continue in Miyagi, Aichi, and Hyogo prefectures throughout February, concluding with shows in Fukuoka on February 28 and March 1, 2026.
