The Sasebo Sound Chronicle Award has officially opened for submissions as of Monday, August 18.
The award is part of the Nagasaki Peace Culture Festival 2025, taking place from September 14 to November 30. It will be held alongside the special exhibition “Sasebo Peace Exhibition: A Journey Through Time from the Sea” at the Sasebo City Museum Islandse Art Center from October 31. The competition invites creators and artists from across Japan to submit sound-based works, with no restrictions on genre.
This year’s theme, “Shoreline: Blending, Resonating,” reflects the cultural diversity of Sasebo and draws a parallel with the way waters meet and mix at the shoreline. The official submission site provides optional field-recorded sounds from Sasebo, along with a field recording map for participants to reference.
Judges include Shuta Hasunuma and Kuniyuki Takahashi. Ten finalists will have their works displayed in the special exhibition, and the grand prize winner will receive mentoring from the judges, be invited to the award ceremony in Sasebo, and gain the opportunity to perform. Submissions are open until September 19.
