Singer-songwriter FiJA will release her debut album Fragile Thing on Friday, July 18 through aTak Records, the label founded by internationally renowned trumpeter Takuya Kuroda.
FiJA first immersed herself in soul, funk, and R&B while studying in the US, where she performed in a gospel choir. Since returning to Japan, she has steadily built a following through live performances at restaurants, events, and jam sessions across Tokyo. Her soulful voice has gained recognition in the local scene and beyond, leading to a feature on “Bad Bye” from Kuroda’s latest album EVERYDAY.
Fragile Thing was produced by Yuki Lin Hayashi, a bassist and producer based between Los Angeles and Tokyo. Drawing from FiJA’s vocals and acoustic guitar sketches, the album brings together a cast of musicians she admires. “Unconditional,” one of the songs written in LA, features keyboardist Eddie Brown — known for his work with Stevie Wonder — and guitarist Serg Dimitrijevic of Earth, Wind & Fire. The album blends R&B, soul, funk, pop, and electronic elements into a borderless, expressive sound.
Ahead of the album’s release, FiJA shared the single “Taste feat. Takuya Kuroda” on June 27. The track reimagines an acoustic version from her 2020 EP Room for One More, now reworked with full-band instrumentation and Kuroda’s signature trumpet and horn section.
FiJA will celebrate the release with her first solo headline show on Thursday, July 31 at WALL&WALL in Omotesando, Tokyo.
