To mark the 20th anniversary of its original release, the live-action film adaptation of Ai Yazawa’s NANA will return to theaters for a limited revival screening. The film will be shown in a newly remastered digital format for the first time, beginning Friday, July 11, at White Cine Quint in Shibuya, Tokyo.
Released in 2005, NANA is based on Yazawa’s iconic manga of the same name and follows the intertwined lives of two young women who share not only a name, but a transformative period in their early twenties. Nana Osaki, portrayed by Mika Nakashima, is a fiercely charismatic vocalist chasing a major label debut with her band. Nana Komatsu, played by Aoi Miyazaki, is a romantic and ordinary girl whose life revolves around love. The story captures their friendship, dreams, heartbreaks, and coming-of-age experiences in Tokyo.
The film also features a strong supporting cast, including Hiroki Narimiya, Kenichi Matsuyama, Yuta Hiraoka, Tomomi Maruyama, Tetsuji Tamayama, and Ryuhei Matsuda.
The theme song, “GLAMOROUS SKY,” performed by Nakashima under the name “NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA,” became a cultural touchstone upon release. The song was composed by HYDE of L’ArcenCiel, with lyrics written by Yazawa herself—further deepening the connection between the manga and the film.
Further screening details, including the full schedule, will be announced soon.
