Legendary pop duo Sparks, made up of brothers Ron and Russell Mael, will return to Japan this June for their first tour in two years, with four performances scheduled across Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo.
Known for their ever-evolving sound and theatrical flair, Sparks have carved out a unique place in pop history since their 1971 debut, blending glam rock, power pop, electro, dance-pop, and even chamber pop into a singular musical universe. Japanese fans were reintroduced to their creativity in 2022 through their work on Leos Carax’s film Annette, for which the Mael brothers provided the original story and music, and Edgar Wright’s documentary The Sparks Brothers, both of which generated significant buzz upon their release in Japan. Their 2023 visit saw both Tokyo shows sell out quickly, further solidifying their devoted following in the country.
This summer’s Japan tour kicks off on Sunday, June 8 at ROHM Theatre Kyoto (South Hall), followed by a show at Zepp Namba in Osaka on Tuesday, June 10. The tour will wrap up with two nights at EX THEATER ROPPONGI in Tokyo on Thursday, June 12 and Friday, June 13. Tickets are already on sale, with the Kyoto performance currently sold out.
In addition to the tour, Sparks released their 28th studio album MAD! on May 23. The Japanese edition includes a bonus track—a remix of “Do Things My Own Way” by Cornelius, offering an exclusive treat for fans in Japan.
With a career spanning over five decades and a reputation for pushing pop music’s boundaries, Sparks’ upcoming tour promises to deliver both nostalgia and surprise. Fans can expect a dynamic setlist blending classic hits with fresh material from MAD!, making this a must-see event for longtime listeners and newcomers alike.
