To mark the 30th anniversary of his directorial debut, filmmaker Shunji Iwai will host a special concert on July 20 (Sun) and 21 (Mon, national holiday) at Cotton Club in Marunouchi, Tokyo.
Beloved for his distinctive storytelling that blends visuals and music into a singular cinematic experience, Iwai has captivated audiences with films like Love Letter, Swallowtail Butterfly, and All About Lily Chou-Chou. The upcoming concert will spotlight the soundtrack music that has shaped the emotional core of his works, performed live by musicians closely connected to his films.
The program centers around Iwai’s debut film Love Letter and will include a talk segment featuring the director himself, offering a deeper look into the stories behind the music and the movies.
The ensemble includes pianist Yui Makino—who contributed to the Love Letter score at the age of eight—cellist Jumpei Hayashida, and violinist Momoko Arai. Special guest vocalists Kyoko Koizumi and Toko Miura will also make appearances.
Advance online ticket sales began at noon on Wednesday, May 28.
