LOLOET has unveiled the music video for their latest track “ELLE” on YouTube, which was released on Thursday, April 24, at 9:00 PM.
The song features Ayaka Wada, known as Ayacho, as the lyricist and lead vocalist. LOLOET was formed in 2023 while Ayaka was studying abroad in Paris, as she sought a more liberated form of musical expression. The band is composed of notable Tokyo-based musicians, including Keito Tsuru on bass (from “Arakajime Kimerararetai Koibito-tachi e”), hamachi on drums (from “Hanazono Distance”), Happymen (Yukio Yoshizawa) on guitar (from “ZION”), and Chan keng on trumpet and synthesizer (from “The SKAMOTTS” and “THE ZOOT 16”).
“ELLE” marks a significant shift for LOLOET, as it is their first venture into an ambient folk song with vocals, moving away from their earlier poetry reading-style performances. The track opens with a warm, nostalgic trumpet melody before building to an emotional ensemble toward its conclusion. The lyrics, written by Ayaka Wada, tell the poignant story of two sisters grappling with emotional misunderstandings. Delivered in French, the song’s narrative is a heartfelt message from an older sister to her younger sibling, offering comfort in the face of loneliness.
The music video was directed by Tomohiro Hara, a filmmaker and French-language translator. The video, shot entirely with film cameras, features Ayaka Wada standing amid ice and snow, captured with an analog, textured feel. In conjunction with the release, Ayaka Wada shared a special comment reflecting on the project.
For the music video, I envisioned an abstract concept that stirs her emotions—emotions that are closed off—and in turn, stirs mine as well.
At first, I thought it might be better if my image wasn’t included, but then I felt that it could work to show myself briefly in the video, as long as it’s in a space where I wouldn’t be objectified.
Within this abstract imagery, I encourage you to reflect on the significance of not showing any expression.
