Sega has announced that it has begun planning and development for a movie adaptation of its popular game OutRun, in collaboration with Universal Pictures in the U.S.
The OutRun series, which debuted in arcades in 1986, pioneered the “driving game” genre, allowing players to enjoy the beauty of each course’s scenery while speeding through them. The game’s soundtrack has also received high praise, and OutRun has become a subgenre within electronic music. Over the years, many series entries have been released, including titles for home consoles, making it one of Sega’s most globally popular franchises.

For the movie adaptation, Michael Bay, known for the Transformers series, has been confirmed as the director. The screenplay will be written by Jason Roswell, known for Polar: The Assassin’s Code.
Michael Bay will also serve as a producer alongside Brad Fuller from his production company, Platinum Dunes. Other producers include Sydney Sweeney, who worked on Pretender and Immaculate (working title), and Sega’s Tetsu Nakahara. Additionally, Sega’s Shuji Uchiumi will act as the executive producer.
Universal Pictures, known for successful game-to-film adaptations like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s, has also seen success with Sega in the film industry, particularly with the Sonic the Hedgehog movie series. This collaboration is generating significant anticipation.
